JDOC’s Shock Pop Comic Con 2015 Report

Hello all and welcome to yet another con review from yours truly. This year- 2015 – I start off with Shockpopcomiccon (http://www.shockpopcomiccon.com/), which was held at the Ft. Lauderdale convention center from Feb. 13-15. This is the first con held by the promoters in the South Florida area, and I had to say it was a bit impressive to say the least.

When I arrived on Saturday, I saw it was held in Hall A of the center itself, and was a very huge area with many vendors, ranging from the usual vendors of Tate’s Comics, to Crazy Ed’s, to CJ’s comics, as well as having other vendors as well. There was a wide array of products ranging from comics, to toys, to other things as well. There was also an area exclusive for tattooing, as well as a gaming section filled with home and arcade video games courtesy of local Miami-Dade video arcade Arcade Odyssey.

The media guests ranged from Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger- Nightmare on Elm Street), to Danny Trejo (various Robert Rodriguez and Quinton Tarentino films), to even Zach Galligan (Gremlins and Gremlins 2) and Samantha Newark (acting voice-Jem the animated series), to even famed director John Waters. There were also comic pros such as Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner, Mike Deodato Jr., and Gerry Conway, alongside Jose Delbo, and many others.

The show also featured a few cosplayers such as Ivy Doomkitty (https://www.facebook.com/ivydoomkittyivy?fref=nf) (cosplaying femKuzco from Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove), Ani-Mia (https://www.facebook.com/Ani.Mia.Cosplay) (cosplaying Lucy statue- Kotobyuka Ghostbusters), Nadyasonika(https://www.facebook.com/nadyasonikacosplay), (cosplaying as femCyclops), and Florida locals such as Envy Us (https://www.facebook.com/Envy.Deviant) (cosplaying as femJason from Friday the 13th), Callie Cosplay (https://www.facebook.com/leahcalliecosplay) (cosplaying as Black canary), and new additions Nerd Bunny (https://www.facebook.com/thenerdbunny) (cosplaying as Zatanna) and Dahlia Thomas (https://www.facebook.com/DahliaThomasCosplay) (cosplaying as femFreddy from nightmare on Elm Street).

For its first con, it was very impressive because of all the guests they were able to have, as well as having some live music in between. Although it wasn’t as packed as a usual Saturday con is (which i know from prior cons I’ve gone to on Saturdays only), there was still a huge enough turnout to say the least.

I also had the chance to sit in on at least one panel, which had fan films from GeekfestLA, and consisted of a few short films at the screening I attended: 1. The Visitant (starring Amy Smart); 2. Sweethearts of The Galaxy (starring cosplayers Kit Quinn) (https://www.facebook.com/misskitquinn) and Tallest Silver (https://www.facebook.com/tallest.silver) (from California); 3.Carolina Parakeet (another zombie film along the lines of Walking Dead); and 4. Good Gamers (a movie about pro game players playing pc game StarcraftII and their lives covered from 2011-2013 as they played on the pro game circuit).

Overall, I would have to say this was a great con experience to start off my con circuit for this year, and I cant wait to see what’s next for me. Until next time, when the next show for me will be in March at Geekfest (http://geekfestflorida.com/) see ya and may your con experiences be great ones.

As always, here’s a link to my personal Facebook page for con pics and comments welcome:
