Florida SuperCon 2013

Hi all, JDOC here, and welcome to a convention review of Supercon 2013. This year it was held once again at the MACC (Miami Airport Convention Center), located at 711 NW 72nd Ave, Miami FL. 33126. This year’s convention was very surprising because not only did they take over the entire 2 floors of the center itself, but also expanded themselves into the Doubletree Hotel’s ballroom, located next door to it.

This year had many guests, from artists ranging from Golden Age great Alan Bellman (Captain America-Timely/Marvel), to Silver Age artist Nick Cardy (Teen Titans-DC), to modern artists such as Florida’s own george Perez, Greg Horn (Cover artist-DC,Marvel,Zenescope, et al) and Dexter Vines (DC-Superman/Batman). There were also many media guests as well, ranging from actors from the Walking Dead series, to Star Trek’s own George Takei (the show’s featured guest of Honor in media), to animated series such as Gen.1 Transformers and G.I. Joe voice artists such as Morgan Lofting (Baroness- G.I. Joe; Firestar- Transformers), Hal Rayle (Deep Six-G.I.Joe;Shrapnel,Primacron- Transformers), Dan Gilvezan (Bumblebee,Goldbug-Transformers;Spiderman(Spiderman and His Amazing Friends), Slipstream- G.I. Joe), Gregg Berger (Grimlock- Transformers;Spirit,Cutter,Firefly,Sparx- G.I.Joe), Garry Chalk (Optimus Primal(Beast Wars);Metalhead,Pathfinder- G.I.Joe), and others such as Richard Horvitz (Zim-Invader Zim;Alpha 5(MMPR);Billy- Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy), Hynden Walch (Starfire-Teen Titans) and Jennifer Hale (Daphne-Scooby Doo Direct to DVD movies;Batman:The Brave and The Bold), to Jeremy Shada (Finn-Adventure Time).

Besides the Walking Dead cast members as one big attraction, there were also several voice and cast members from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as the other big attraction, since this year marks the 20th anniversary of the series on air: David Yost (Billy), Walter Jones (Zack), Barbara Goodson (Rita Repulsa), Robert Axelrod (Lord Zed, Finnster), and the main attraction: Jason David Frank himself (Tommy Oliver-MMPR; Dr. Oliver-PR Dinothunder). There were also many featured cosplayer guests from Soni Aralyn:(https://www.facebook.com/sonilovesyoutoo),to Riddle’s Messy Wardrobe (https://www.facebook.com/#!/Riddlesmessywardrobe?fref=ts), to our local cosplayers Heather 1337,Alexia Jean Grey (head cosplay ambassador at the show, as well as cosplay organizer for all the featured cosplayers), to Aly-Chu (Alyssa Axten), to Mad Mel Madigan. One of the main featured cosplayers for this convention was Florida’s Callie Cosplay, who was in very good health after suffering from some serious illnesses awhile back, making her first major convention appearance- check out her facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CallieCosplay.

Although I wasnt able to make it for Thursday’s events, I did make the rest of the convention from Friday-Sunday. Due to the enormous amount of different events, I wasnt able to cover every event, as i walked the floor, getting autographs, and taking various pics inside the con,but I did cover at least 2: An animation panel featuring the earlier-mentioned G.I. Joe/Transformers voice artists, our own Geek Scene Panel, and the Cosplay Costume contest on Saturday, as well as 3 of the 4 days of FSCW (Florida Supercon Wrestling) matches. The voice panel spoke about how they each got their speaking roles in both aniamted series, as well as Garry Chalk getting the main role of Optimus Primal in Beast Wars. At the Geek Scene Panel, of which i was also a guest speaker, we spoke about how the website was formed, and how we cover everything in Florida where we can with our contirbuting staff, composed of volunteer writers such as myself, and how to be able to write for us (as explained below under contact information at the bottom of this site page, and if you also want to add your own coverage at the con, including any events held there not covered by us, feel free to send in your submissions, again located below under contacting us).

The cosplay contest was interesting because of the different types of costumes that were entered, as well as some group pairings. The winners won VIP passes for next year’s Supercon. The main nightime event, besides comedy in other rooms, as well as live band performances, was the FSCW matches, as well as a rave held post-match in the main events room. These matches pitted anything from comic book characters, such as Joker, to video games (Mario), to movies (Clockwork Orange), to animation, to even tv series (MMPR), in several different types of matches, ranging from 3-ways, to tag-teams, to even the Heavyweight Championship belt on the line (held by Joker). The big surprise was several real wrestlers also showed up to partake in the events, ranging from Jesse Neal, to featured guests at the show itself, such as Sgt. Slaughter, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and even the Taskmaster himself, Kevin Sullivan, as well as Shane “Hurricane’ Helms, and even Greg ‘The Hammer’ Valentine. Of these wrestlers, only the Sarge and Greg Valentine did not wrestle in the matches, instead giving support ringside in one match as Hacksaw went up vs. the Cobra wrestlers, represented by Dr. Mindbender, Buzzer, Torch, Firefly, and Zartan, with Major Bludd as ringside support.

The crowd went wild when they saw on Saturday night Hacksaw winning the match, thanks to help from both the Sarge and Greg Valentine, as Hacksaw had been outnumbered by nearly 5-1 by Cobra’s forces. One of the craziest matches Saturday was the TLC (Tables,Ladders,Chairs) match, in which the prize was the coveted ‘XP’ trophy, dangling above the squared circle. After a grueling battle royal of sorts for the belt, featuring Mario, Link, King Hippo, Deadpool, Kick Ass, Nightcrawler, members of Cobra, and Clockwork Orange’s Alex DeLarge, among others, Link came out on top as the winner. During this grueling match, which included a bit of unorchestrated audience participation via metal chairs used in the match itself, an injury occurred to Deadpool, but thanks to his rather quick healing factor, the ‘Merc With A Mouth’, recovered and was back in fighting form the next night as one of the lumberjacks during the Lumberjack Match between Mario and Alex (in which Alex’s cronies werent allowed ringside per FSCW Commissioner Harvey Dent’s decision). Hurricane, Kevin, and Jesse also had their own individual matches in between as well during these 4 days of wrestling goodness.

We even had a funny match happening Sunday between the Beast and Walking Dead, as the main hero from Walking Dead (officer Rick Grimes) was bitten by a zombie he had in tow, and he later turned up as one during the lumberjack match. The main event occurred Sunday when the FSCW belt, held by Joker, was up for grabs in a 3-way match between himself, Green Arrow, and Bane. As the match started, Green Arrow became injured, but continued to wrestle, albeit in his injured state, and just when things were looking like it might just be Joker and Bane duking it out, Link appears and cashes in the XP prize won Sat. night. After a long battle, Link pins the Joker, thereby becoming the new FSCW champion, which means you know there’s going to be a lot of hype set up from now until that rematch occurs at Supercon 2014.

The main surprise occurred Sunday before the last wrestling matches, when Kevin Smith actually appeared to do a live podcast from the con, alongside his fellow Comic Book Men (who were featured guests at the show): Ming Chen, Bryan Johnson, and Mike Zapcic. The highlight was when an unannounced appearance by Jason Mewes was done at the podcast on stage in the main events room area, where the wrestling was also being held later on after the podcast (and if anyone has any pics of this podcast event who reads this review, please fwd them to this site, as i was unable to take any pics due to my cell phone running out of charge at the time).

Overall, the convention had its good points (many guests, many featured products, events, free video games), and its bad points (parking for all 4 days and the enomous crowd Sat. as well, not to mention the slight detours you have to take as the 826/836 interchange is being reconstructed completely w/a target completion date of 2015, and the MACC center is in that same area), but overall Supercon yet outdid itself again with another smashing show, and I cant wait for next year, as the featured Guests of Honor for comics has already been announced: The Romitas-John Sr. and John Jr., as well the featured dates: Thurs July 3rd- Sun July 6th, at a new venue, that their site im sure will announce (since it looks like they got too big for their britches) :Floridasupercon.com. I cant wait for next year to come around already. Please note: If by chance, your pic is not featured as part of this article that i took of you myself, you can go to my personal Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/#!/john.cruz.946. and see it there under the heading: Supercon 2013 due to the normous amount of con pics I took, which will be downloaded and can be seen there in the hext few days. Next review up: Ultracon in Miami in 2 weeks. Hope to see you all there.
