Star Wars Night A Galactic Success For The Florida Panthers

It was a night of cosplay and Jedi celebration as the Florida Panthers held their second annual ‘Star Wars Night’ on December 20th at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. A much larger than usual Tuesday night crowd turned out for the family-friendly evening, which also saw Panthers legend Jaromir Jagr move into second place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list (he had two assists to give 1,887 career points). Force-loving fans were treated to a cool opening sequence before they dropped the puck featuring scenes from the Star Wars movies intercut with hockey moments.

The huge 360-degree scoreboard that hangs above the ice had several cool animations featuring BB-8 as well. A special SW-themed poster was given away to fans, and those who bought special ticket packages also received commemorative t-shirts and hockey pucks.

Fans also were treated to photo-ops in the arena concourse with Stormtroopers, bounty hunters and Tie Fighter pilots. Hundreds of fans came in costume, fans young and old.

Even the Sith Lord himself, Darth Vader, is apparently a hockey fan. He showed up as well.

Star Wars onesies and hoodies were popular ensemble choices.

Many fans took the opportunity to dress up as their favorite character, including many as Princess Leia. That of course, is the character Carrie Fisher made famous. Fisher, a bestselling writer as well as actress, died on Tuesday, December 27th at the age of 60.
