The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival

Founded in 1986 as the Greater Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. In 1989, the name was legally changed to Broward County Film Society, reflecting a membership base and year-round presence. In 1991, we added a dba of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

In 1998, Broward County asked FLIFF to become a co-tenant with The Vinnette Carroll Repertory Company in the lease of The Vinnette Carroll Theatre. Ms. Carroll passed away in 2002, and FLIFF became the sole tenant at that time.

Now in its 26th year, The Film Society has come a long way since its roots of being a vagabond organization to one of five Major Cultural Institutions of Broward County.
