Series 2 of the Toys “R” US exclusive Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble figures includes Black Panther, Black Widow, Captain America (Steve Rogers) & Iron Man (Extremis). Just like Series 1, these are re-painted/re-tooled figures with a light up Avengers stand. I’ve been interested in an updated Black Widow since finding out she would be in Series 2, let’s see if it was worth picking up.
Like the rest of the figures in this series, Black Widow has a nice window display package. Large Black Widow artwork on the side and smaller on the front, both of which look great. The artwork on the side reminding me of Marvel Select. Back of the package shows both Series 1 and Series 2 on the completed “S.H.I.E.L.D. Platform”.
Black Widow uses the same body as her previous Wave 7 release (Wave 3 Ms. Marvel) and her headsculpt is from the Greatest Battles Dark Phoenix. While this is a simple sculpt, it works perfectly combined with the belt and bracelets.
Very simple paintjob. Body is cast completely in black plastic with only a small amount of gloss added. This time Black Widow doesn’t have the metallic sheen she had in her previous release. Bracelets and belt molded in a metallic gold/yelow plastic with the symbol painted on. I’m glad Hasbro finally decided to keep it simple, it’s nice to see a figure without excessive paintwash.
Black Widow has 17+ POA. For an older sculpt, it’s surprisingly articulate. Upper chest articulation and the waist articulation (hidden behind the belt) are a nice touch. Only complaint is that the legs aren’t the easiest to pose and the shoulders could each use an extra POA.
As with Series 1, the light-up base is the main accessory/gimmick. Just like Black Panther, the stand is Black Widow’s only accessory. Even if I did buy all of the figures from Series 1 & 2 I still don’t think i’d bother completing the “S.H.I.E.L.D. Platform” (it’s corny looking). Unless you’re in need of a light-up paperweight, this one’s going in your junk bin. Kind’ve surprised they didn’t at least throw in the machine gun from her previous release.
Comic Book Accuracy
The gold bracelets & belt have been used way more often in Black Widow’s modern comic book appearances and that’s enough to make this figure nearly 100% accurate. Honestly the only thing she’s missing is her trademark cleavage (lol).
Yes this is a cheap re-paint with a very expensive stand but it’s the most accurate Black Widow that Hasbro has released for the Marvel Universe line. Alot of people seem to have a problem with the re-used Dark Phoenix head but I haven’t taken issue with it because I don’t really collect X-Men figures. If you don’t like the new head, stick with the first version. But for me, this figure will be replacing her previous version in my Heroic Age Secret Avengers team. Speaking of which, Hasbro really needs to make Valkyrie & Sharon Carter figures. Just sayin’.
A huge THANK YOU to dragonkings from the Marvelous News Forums for getting me Black Panther and Black Widow. Series 2 is supposedly showing up in select Toys “R” Us stores but I haven’t seen them hit Florida or their toysrus.com yet. My guess is that there’s so many of Series 1 sitting on the shelves, it’s going to be awhile until you see Series 2 in your local store.
