Legends of Wrestling 2016

Hi all, this is your friendly neighborhood writer JDOC here, with yet another great event that happened in the South Florida area. Again, I do apologize for the late writing of this, but as always real life (aka my real job) kept me busy, and now I’ve gotten the free time to write this article for your enjoyment and amusement.

This time around, I went to a special event held at the Miccosukee Indian Gaming And Resort :Legends of Wrestling. The event was held on Jan. 23, 2016, and was created by one of the Nasty Boys: Brian Knobbs. This event included a special meet and greet before the matches, which yours truly was able to attend. The wrestling guests consisted of both former and current wrestling legends.

The guest list was huge, consisting of over 20 of the best around. In no particular order, here were the attendees: Nasty Boys Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags, Mouth of The South Jimmy Hart, Olympian Kurt Angle, Gangrel, Koko B. Ware, Goldberg, Tyrus fka The Funkasaurus Brodus Clay, Mr. Andersen fka Mr. Kennedy, Chavo Guerrero, Mick Foley (aka Cactus Jack, Dude Love, Mankind), Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake and Greg ‘The Hammer’ Valentine, The Genius aka Leaping Lanny Poffo, Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat, Wes Brisco, Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner, Diesel aka ‘Big Sexy’ Kevin Nash, Bushwacker Luke, Jessy Sorensen, Hardcore Tommy Dreamer, Knux aka Mike Knox, and Andrew Andersen.

Unfortunately, due to the bad snow weather that weekend outside of Florida, Hacksaw Jim Duggan was unable to make it to the event since flights were cancelled all around, and his was one of them. Now i paid $200 for the meet and greet, but it was worth every dollar to get to see and talk to each wrestler individually. The event ran for 2 hrs itself (4-6pm), before the matches, which would begin at 7:30 sharp.

The highlight for me was I actually got to wear Lanny Poffo’s WWE Hall of Fame ring, which was awesome. I also spent some time talking to Lanny Poffo about himself, and his brother, the late and greatly missed ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage.

I also did the same with Ricky Steamboat, as we discussed Wrestlemania 3, and the Intercontinental Championship match, which is considered as one of the greatest Wrestlemania moments, as it stole the show, with its long match time down to the wire.

On to the matches: I missed the first match, since i was having dinner and stayed a bit late eating, but i did catch the rest of the matches afterward.

In no particular order:

Tyrus vs. Warpig (up and coming wrestler)- Tyrus wins via pinfall (Tyrus was the heel)

Nasty Boys vs. Knux and Mr. Andersen- Nasty Boys win via pin, celebrating alongside Jimmy Hart and Mick Foley

Brutus Beefcake vs. Andrew Andersen- Beefcake wins w/assist from Greg Valentine

Brief intro by Nasty Boy Brian Knobbs alongside Kurt Angle and one of the Miccosukee Tribe representatives, who helped to organize this event

Koko B. Ware and Bushwacker Luke vs. Knux and Wes Brisco- Koko and Luke win via pinfall w/assist from Ricky Steamboat

Tommy Dreamer vs. Wes Brisco (match begins slow, then picks up when Dreamer changes it to a hardcore match)- Dreamer wins

Gangrel vs. unknown opponent w/mgr- Gangrel wins

Lanny Poffo recites an original poem for the event (which includes a line about Macho Man), but is interrupted in the end by Wes Brisco, as Brisco assaults him in the ring, flooring him

Now on to the Main Event: For the Miccosukee Championship Belt- Chavo Guerrero vs. Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner.

This match went back and forth between both wrestlers, as Scott used his strength vs. Chavo’s wits, but after several wrestlers on both sides interfered, Big Poppa Pump came out with the Title, but not with the Belt, as he was speared by Goldberg, who then proceeded to give the Belt to the Miccosukee representative.

Scott was none too pleased with this, swearing revenge, and promising he would regain the Belt in the future.

Overall, this was one of the greatest wrestling matches I’ve been to in years (My last true match was back in the early 90’s when Hogan was still with the WWE (then WWF), and he was in the main event vs. Kamala at the James L. Knight Center in downtown Miami), and I hope to see a return of these wrestlers soon.

This is the JDOC signing off on this, saying as always, have fun wherever you go, whether it’s an event, or a con, geek or non-geek related. Next up for yours truly: APE (Arcade And Pinball Expo) in Feb. at the Mardi Gras Casino- see ya
