Outside of attending a hand full of the annual Nerdapalooza festivals I’m not too privy to how well the nerd music community thrives in Central Florida. I’ve seen more prevailing performers such as MC Frontalot and Schaffer the Dark Lord pack out venues and conjoined convention center meeting rooms, so that’s something. Recently a mutual acquaintance e-introduced my to Orlando Gameboy Colorcore outfit: Team-Rock-it. Obviously, they’re a nerdcore rap group who rolls down route 8 in a (full-size) Escalade because they just don’t give a butt. What’s not to love? To my delight I found out they perform live and are involved in this quagmire of show on May 14th at Mills Avenue’s favorite punk rock studio apartment. Yes, I mean Uncle Lou’s.
The Mills/50 take over (or geek-over) features a touring support set from Bubblegum Octopus (aka M@ the C@) and Kitty Pryde. Now, this demented octopus embodied into a bearded biped cranks out mass quantities of attention deficit electronic tunes. For you genre catch all types expect brutal digital grindcore segues and expansive sprints of mach speed chip tuning. Kitty on the other hand flaunts a comedic self-aware motif to her nerdcore rhymes. I’d like to hope that most double x nerds are aware of the invaluable hilarity elicited by insufferably conceited hordes of nrd pr1nce$$ grlz. While I’ve never met Kitty personally her tongue in cheek bravado from her Bandcamp single speaks for itself. Otherwise, I’ll still probably laugh and I’d suggest she go audition for (the) Millionaires post haste. Her performance should prove to create a unique, and inexplicably juxta posed, dichotomy for the poorly lit DIY aesthetic that only Lou’s can provide.
Three additional locals wrap up the bill including a captivating instrumental set by Nihon-inspired trip-hop group Dior Sentai who captured my attention from their Bandcamp page. Expect additional spastic chip tuning from Gradius Cat, and to bask in the surmounting aural scenery of Trotsky’s Watercooler (yes, it felt very silly to type that last string of depictions).
