The film opens up to the medical student Mary Mason, who stitches together the flesh of a raw turkey. Though Mary is a promising surgeon, she isn’t doing well in class due to constant money problems. Mary, desperate to finish school, applies to be a stripper. The interview with Billy, the sleazy club owner, is interrupted by the bouncer of the club, who reveals that one Billy’s associates has been sliced and diced. Billy has a proposition for Mary. He simply wants Mary to stitch his friend back together! Mary, despite this being a potential damage to her career, agrees to do it, no questions asked. How could she miss out an opportunity for FIVE GRAND?!

The next morning, word has spread about Mary’s skills as a surgeon, specifically to a woman named Beatress. Beatress works at the club. After many past operations, she has come to look like Betty Boop. Her history under the knife leads her to asks Mary to help her friend, who wants a body modification operation. Beatress is persistent and willing to pay top dollars. Of course, Mary cannot turn this down either!

The success of the surgery spreads even further than before as more people come to Dr. Mary Mason for their surgical needs! Unfortunately, things for Mary turn for the worse when she is taken advantage of at a party of an esteemed Professor. Through her turmoil, Mary experiences a growing clientele, from average body modification to the extreme people, like the Soska twins! As the film goes on, Mary strays down a dark path between surgery and murder!

This film wasn’t what I thought it was going to be, but in a good way. I thought it was going to be one of those extreme films with too much blood, unnecessary nudity, and no story line. However, I was wrong and very pleased with this film! Katharine Isabelle played Mary and did an awesome job! She was a struggling, angelic student at the beginning but became intimidating, somewhat of super villainous at the end. There was blood and gore, but it was a moderate amount. It wasn’t excessive for no apparent reason. There were also a few humorous parts that fit right in.

Jen and Sylvia Soska did an amazing job with the directing and writing. Of course, this film is an upgrade from Dead Hooker in a Trunk visually; however, I can still see their filming style. The only thing I did not care for in this film was the ending. It seemed a bit rushed! I’m still in the middle about the overall movie since I neither loved nor hated the ending. However, I did want a bit more! For me, Mary Mason was such a strong character, so this can’t be all that she has to offer!

Overall, I do recommend this film. American Mary is disturbing, dark, fun and entertaining!
