It’s ANIME SATURDAY and we’re kicking this weekend off with a bang! The killer anime series Afro Samurai, based on the manga series of the same name, is a whirlwind of fantastic animation, fight choreography, and general bad-assery. Viewable on Netflix, Afro Samurai is a flawless adventure of revenge and soul.

Afro Samurai’s father was the Number 1 fighter in the world, and bore the Number 1 headband – which was rumored to contain unstoppable power. However, the Number 2 fighter in the world challenged Afro’s father, ultimately destroying him and leaving a traumatized, infuriated Afro in his wake. The brutality Afro experiences in these first moments resonates within the viewer, instantly aligning all to Afro’s bloody revenge plot. The rest of the brief anime series documents his trials as he climbs his way to the Number 2 position, preparing to slaughter his father’s murderer. Master of the sword, Afro seems indomitable… at first.

Afro Samurai also has an impeccable soundtrack, loaded with fresh hip-hop. This anime series is incredibly vivid and engaging as every scene features radical violence fluidly choreographed. Animes of this quality are rare, and while the narrative of Afro Samurai is commanding and intricate, the true addiction lies in the flawlessly drawn action.

Afro Samurai is composed of 5 episodes, a sequel movie Afro Samurai: Resurrection, a video game, and the original seinen manga series.
