As a fan of the B-rate action/horror movie genre, I had high hopes for the first installment, and I’m happy to say, some of them were met.

Good news, everyone! No, not new episodes of Futurama (ever again), but another installment of the “Both Barrels Comic Book Review.” Our subject today is a new series of runs from Dark Horse Comics, with all the B-movie style sex and gore you’d want in a so-bad-it’s-good drive in flick; namely, Grindhouse: Doors Open At Midnight – Bee Vixens From Mars, Volume 1.

As a fan of the B-rate action/horror movie genre, I had high hopes for the first installment, and I’m happy to say, some of them were met.

This book was written by Eisner Award nominee Alex De Campi, with art by Chris Peterson. One of the tough things about reviewing a work like this is that there has to be an element of bad to make it good. This genre isn’t about being the most unique, intellectual, engaging storyline you can come across.

Instead, it’s about fun and ridiculousness. From the first page, the comic doesn’t take itself too seriously. I mean, it’s about sexy female bee aliens from Mars. Tongue-in-cheek is built into that very idea.

The story revolves around the small town cops who trip over this infestation, and try to survive the vile plan. The run features a few different stories, with two volumes per, so this will only be a two part series. Don’t expect it to get too deep on any level.

The writing is ok, and keeps the story moving along. The dialogue is pretty run of the mill, complete with words spelled how southerners pro-nownce dem, and everything else you could want to feel like you’re right there. All in all, an ok read if that’s what you’re into.

If not, then you probably won’t enjoy it. Parents, the informed choice is up to you if you want to be responsible and keep it out of the hands of the under 16 crowd, or if you want to be cool.
