GWAR: Orgasmageddon #1

8 Overall Score
Art: 7/10
Dialogue: 8/10
Story: 9/10

It's a bit like Bill & Ted meets Hellraiser.

Not really going to appeal to anyone who isn't already a fan.

So right off the bat, I want to say that I’m a huge GWAR fan. I love the silliness, the fun, and the ridiculous antics, so my opinion of this book is going to be pretty different from someone who’s never heard of them before, naturally. But I don’t think enjoyment of the comic is dependent on knowing or loving the band. There’s plenty of silly, gross comics people pick up and have fun with, and this is just one more example of that to them. It’s not got the best art, the “story” is just an excuse to string together excuses to kill people, and nothing makes any sense. But it sure is fun!

As for for the art, I find myself saying “there’s nothing wrong with it” a lot lately. It’s fine, if you’re into simple, easy to read art with consistency that doesn’t matter. It’s easy to look at, laugh at, and understands what’s going on. That’s pretty important for a comic book. But it doesn’t shine. It’s “just” good enough, and I’ll always want a little more than that.

As I’ve said, the story doesn’t really matter, but it’s not the book’s strongest point. It’s pretty much one joke after another, with some silly excuse for the band to hop from scene to scene leaving behind as much spilled blood and guts as possible, with a few gross-out jokes tossed in for juvenile good measure. But, that’s the point.

Orgasmageddon is another example of a book which you probably know exactly how you’re going to like it before you ever crack the cover. If you’re into GWAR, this is a no-brainer, because it’s just more of what the band is all about, and you’re probably going to love it. If you don’t dig on the band, though, you’re not likely to really get much out of this. It’s gross and crass and foul, and that’s what people will love it for.
