Nerd Block Classic July 2014

Subscription Box Nerd Block

Theme Classic (“Comic Con in a box, plus a shirt, monthly!”)

Price $19.99 / month (additional cost for larger shirt sizes)

Shipping $9.50 US / $8.75 Canada

Apparently I was living under a rock because I was pretty much oblivious to the ever growing phenomena of “Subscription Boxes”. If you’re like me and weren’t familiar with the concept, i’ll break it down simply. For a set price, different companies will assemble a mystery box of different items with a set theme. Researching the boxes I’ve seen all sorts of themes, pet foods, hair products, men’s shaving supplies, plant seeds, baby clothes and hundreds and more.

"A monthly mystery package delivered right to your door filled with nerdy apparel, toys, and collectables!"

“A monthly mystery package delivered right to your door filled with nerdy apparel, toys, and collectibles!”

For my first ever box the folks at the Canada-based Nerd Block company were nice enough to send me their “Classic”. Every month the “Classic” box includes a selection of toys & collectibles picked specifically for fans of comics, movies & video games. There’s also always a different shirt in each month’s box.

Weighing just over 2 pounds it was heavier than I thought it would be. I’d say it’s slightly bigger than a shoe box. Let’s get right to the goods, it’s time to make like Brad Pitt and find out “What’s in the box?!?!”

Cowabunga! Turtle Power! Radical!

“Cowabunga! Turtle Power! Radical!”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Turtle Power T-Shirt

A high quality print that’s slightly distressed to give it a vintage look. Nice strong material too, I really dislike the light-weight t-shirts. Design shows off a black & white Turtle Van and looks like a mechanic auto-shop type logo.

Star Wars Insider Magazine

Next up is this month’s issue of the official Star Wars magazine. There was a really nice article on the strength and influence of Star Wars female fans. Also some great interviews with Jeffrey Brown (author of Darth Vader and Son & Vader’s Little Princess) and Vanessa Marshall (voice actress from Star Wars Rebels).

I’m not a fantatic or anything but I love the original trilogy, if I was more of a die-hard fan i’d probably have a subscription to this already.

Nerf Zombie Strike Ricochet

What took up a large Smaller-sized nerf pistol with a zombie theme. Instead of the usual darts the Ricochet comes with two small frisbee-like discs.

Friendly tip, you might not want to shoot anyone in the face because the discs are surprisingly hard.

This is about as cute as a deadly vehicle can get! Direct from our friends at LucasArts, these deformed plush are sure to help with your Kessel run in under 12 parsecs. We simply can't decide which is our favorite!

Star Wars Deformed Vehicle

Pretty large stuffed X-Wing plushie. Somehow they managed to make a vehicle kinda cute and in the style of the Japanese super deformed toys.

I’m not big on plushies so my cat might be taking this one.

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope DVD w/ Exclusive Mini Figures

Nerd Block’s “Nerd Certified Product of the Month” couldn’t have come at a better time considering this weekend if the Super Bowl of Comic Conventions… San Diego Comic Con. This dvd from Morgan Spurlock follows 5 fans on their SDCC journey. As a bonus it includes two mini-figures of Stan Lee (Excelsior!) & Harry Knowles (Ain’t It Cool News).

Considering I not only cover conventions but also love attending them, this is very very relevant to my interests. I’m not going to say I’ve been shooting Harry Knowles and Stan Lee off my desk with the Nerf gun but I won’t say I haven’t.

With over $60 worth of stuff included in a $20 box, i’d say this is a solid value. The box did lean towards Star Wars with the magazine and the plush, there was still a nice variety of items for differing tastes in nerd culture. Overall i’m impressed with my first ever box.

In addition to the Classic, Nerd Block also offers Nerd Block Jr. (“Awesome nerd gear for kids aged 6 to 11”) for boys and girls and the Horror Block (“The Pop Horror Subscription Box!”).
