P is for Pie is a really cute bakery located right in the heart of Winter Park. It is walking distance from East End Market and the popular Harry P. Leu Gardens. Upon arrival at P is for Pie I was really impressed at the themig and decor of the bakery. It has a really warm and homey atmosphere. I am a huge fan of pies and I am very picky about the pie crust. For me the crust makes the pie.
When I try a pie I look for the flaky and buttery crust like in the pies my grandma used to make. Right off the back I was very impressed at the assortment of different pastries, desserts, and savory options that P is for Pie offered. I was automatically drawn to trying the sweet hand pies because lets face it who doesn’t love desserts?! I was really skeptical of trying savory hand pies because they are so easy to mess up. Either having too much filling or not enough and many times mixing savory items with pie crust can lead to it becoming very unpleasantly greasy.
Chicken Cordon Bleu Hand Pie:
This hand pie had roasted chicken, asparagus, rosemary ham, béchamel sauce & Jarlsberg cheese in it. I chose to get it warmed up before trying it and O M G it was delicious. It was the perfect balance of flavors and the pie crust was perfect. Surprisingly the pie crust was not very greasy and the chicken was moist and had good flavor. The asparagus offered a really good fresh flavor to the rich meat and cheese mixture. There was the perfect amount of filling to pie crust ratio and the size was perfect for one person to grab on the go. As you can see in the photo the pie crust was very buttery and flakey. For me many times chicken in dishes like this misses the mark because of lack of flavor but this did not disappoint. The pie crust was cooked to the perfect golden brown. I did not get a chance to try the vegetarian hand pies or quiches but P is for Pie does also offer a good variety of vegetarian options for those who have the need of those types of options.
Blueberry Goat Cheese:
This hand pie was filled with blueberries and goat cheese. I was a little disappointed in this one with the lack of filling it had. The flavor was spot on but as you can see in the photo the hand pie was a bit hollow and the filling seemed as if it stuck to the pie crust. The crust of this pie was again perfect. I really liked this hand pie because even though it had blueberries in it it still was not overpoweringly sweet. It was pleasant to eat and a bit smaller than the savory pie described above. The pie crust on this hand pie wasn’t quite as buttery as on the savory pie but it was still good. I am a huge fan of goat cheese and berries together so I think this hand pie hit the mark pretty well. I just wish it would have had a little more of the cheese filling so that it was more gooey when biting into it. Overall it is a really delicious treat.
Brandied Apple Pie Hand Pie:
This hand pie was by far my favorite out of all of them I tried. Probably because apple pie is one of my
favorite desserts ever!! The pie crust was so buttery and topped with crystalized sugar so it had a really good crunch when biting into it. It had the perfect amount of filling in it and the apple pie filling was fresh, gooey and delicious. Again, this hand pie was not overwhelmingly sweet so it was nice to eat. I loved how fresh and flavorful the brandied apple filling was in this dessert. I really do not like eating desserts that smack me in the face with sweetness. This was the perfect balance of sweet and buttery. The apple pie flavor also comes in really cute heart shaped pie lollipops and slices of pie. I like the hand pies the best because they are really convenient to eat on the go even though they might leave you covered in crumbs :).
Caramel Pecan Hand Pie:
I was really excited to try this hand pie but I was let down. I am a huge fan of anything with caramel and pecans in it and this hand pie missed the mark for me. Pecan pie is one of my favorite desserts and that is the kind of flavor I was expecting from this dessert. The pie crust was perfect but the filling was gritty and lacking the creamy gooey caramel texture that I was hoping for. It was as it they filled the hand pie with a butter, sugar & pecan mixture without creating the gooey caramel that is was so needing. It was very unfortunate because the hand pie had the perfect amount of filling to pie crust ratio. The flavor was there and the pie crust was again perfect but I did not enjoy eating this hand pie due to the raw gritty sugar texture. Out of all of the hand pies this one was my least favorite but it was still pretty good.
Chocolate Thunder Cookie:
If you all couldn’t tell from my last post I have the biggest sweet tooth and my favorite thing ever is probably cookies LOL! No lie I probably eat at least twenty cookies a week! The chocolate thunder cookie did not disappoint. It had the consistency of a brownie but in a cookie form and the chocolate chunks in it were perfect. Surprisingly, it was not too sweet! I was so impressed with this cookie and the flavor it had. It had chunks of powdered sugar on it and I usually don’t like powdered sugar but it went perfectly with the chewy chocolatey deliciousness of this cookie. The cookie was huge as you can see in the photo and was such a delight to eat :). This is the chocolate lovers dream. I could live off these things and be happy.
Oatmeal Whoopie Pie:
Anything with oatmeal cookies in it I’m usually totally game for. This cookie BLEW MY MIND!!!!! The oatmeal cookie was super moist and chewy which is really hard to find in oatmeal cookies. The cream cheese filling was the perfect balance of sweet and savory. The flavors and textures balanced perfectly and sent my tastebuds in overdrive. As you could see I was so hungry I didn’t get a chance to get a good photo of this cookie because it was so darn delicious. Out of everything I tried at P is for pie this was my favorite bite for sure. It is without a doubt the best whoopee pie I have ever had IN MY LIFEEEEE!!!!
All in all P is for Pie is a great local bakery. You will not find better quality pies in any Publix or any other grocery store for that matter. When you support local businesses you are supporting families and the community. Central Florida especially is so controlled by corporate America many who do not live here do not realize how many local gems exist here. Central Florida has the best food scene out of any Florida city I’ve been to. I am not just saying that because I live here I really mean it. There are so many talented and unique local businesses that are so overshadowed by the theme parks and tourist destinations. If you have the choice to visit Orlando and the Central Florida area I highly recommend for you to visit it from a locals view point. I work so hard to promote local businesses because so many people have no idea theses businesses exist. Hopefully one day Central Florida will be a food travel destination because there are SOOOO many unique spots to eat here. Every day I hear about local businesses closing down and it really hurts my heart knowing that these people who but everything into their brands have to close down because they are so overpowered by the highly recognized corporate chain restaurants that keep popping up at every corner. Sorry for the rant but stay tuned for more local reviews and recommendations for the REAL Orlando / Central Florida restaurants and businesses.
