Loot Crate August 2014

Subscription Box Loot Crate

Theme “Monthly Geek and Gamer Subscription Box”

Price $13.37 / month (with discounts for 3 or 6 month subscriptions)

Shipping $6 US

One of the most well-known geek/gamer subscription boxes, Loot Crate was the first of it’s kind. Unlike some of the other geek/gamer boxes, Loot Crate has a different theme every month. Last month was “Villains” so it makes sense that this month’s theme is “Heroes”.

The Loot Crate box is black with the logo and branding on the exterior. It’s slightly smaller than a shoe box but still with some weight to it. While it may not be that exciting on the outside, you’ll see how great the interior of the box is shortly. Now… it’s time for the loot!

Ninja Turtles figure from the folks at Kidrobot. Fantastic paint applications for a small figure. The painted sais are a nice touch.

Retail: $9.99

Glow In The Dark Loot Crate Exclusive

Definitely the feature item of this month’s box, this Funko Pop! is from the recent Guardians of the Galaxy movie. If it was the regular Groot it would’ve been a nice addition but this Loot Crate exclusive features a glow in the dark hand.

Like some of the Funko Pop! figures, this cute Groot is also a bobble head. Paint applications are nice and it’s a well-detailed sculpt.

Retail: $14.99 (Estimated)

Ninja Turtles Michaelangelo glasses that look like his bandana/mask when you wear them.

Retail: $6.99

Schwings Shoe Lightning Bolts

It’s the first time I’ve ever heard of these. Schwings are accessories that attach to your shoelaces.

Retail: $8.99

Another Loot Crate exclusive is this Deadpool-themed fridge magnet. What can I say? The guy loves Chimichangas.

IMG_20140821_235025Epic Scents Video Game Air Freshener

Video game themed air-fresheners? Yep, it’s another first for me. Pretty much like the classic car freshener but in a game design. This one being Sonic the Hedgehog.

Retail: $3.99

Every Loot Crate includes their zine-sized booklet that covers the month’s theme and gives more detailed information about the items included.

The articles were nice, in particular the “what makes a hero?” piece.

Every Loot Crate also comes with a button showing off the month’s theme. The “Heroes” button features a team up of Captain America, Rocket Raccoon, Batman & Mega Man.

Exclusive Bonus Digital Loot

  • Doctor Who: Legacy (unlocks 11 Doctors, Rose Tyler, Clara, and K-9)
  • Defense Grid: The Awakening (Complete Game)
  • Gauntlet (unlocks Exclusive in-game helm Mask of the Wyrm Slayer)

Steam keys for the full version of Defense Grid: The Awakening and DLC content for Gauntlet. The Doctor Who: Legacy code works on both the Android and Apple versions of the game.

Warning: if you’re into Doctor Who or puzzle games, Legacy is really addictive.

Retail: $9.99

This month’s Loot Crate has by far the best packaging I’ve seen for a subscription box. The box unfolds into a large Loot Crate themed Ninja Turtles sewer lair complete with an unfolding couch.

With over $55 worth of stuff, this month’s Lootcrate was a fantastic value. Especially considering they are one of the lowest priced geek/gamer subscription box options.

With the high quality customized packaging, the magazine and the custom button you can tell the folks at Loot Crate put a lot of heart and effort into their boxes.

Disclosure: A complimentary Loot Crate Subscription Box was given for review purposes. All opinions are my own and no compensation was received.
