A fun band to listen to.

It's in German so I have no clue what's going on.

Self-released
2013

We Butter the Bread with Butter have a remarkably silly name for the obvious seriousness they bring to the table with their music. This might be metal in soul and spirit, but it has its eyes looking in the direction of operatic orchestration and its fingers on the knobs of plenty of digital equipment that adds some nice layers to the music. Do I have any clue as to what’s going on? No, but it is refreshing to hear the German lyrics explode from Paul Bartzsch’s lungs.

The rhythm section is anchored by Can Özgünsür on drums and Maximilian Saux on bass. Guitars, keyboards and programming fall on the lap of a very capable Marcel Neumann and it is in those moments of almost club-like technology that WBTBWB can look to stand out amongst its peers; there is some seriousness at play here but there’s also a notion that these guys don’t take themselves too seriously. Which is refreshing. Metal can use a little lightening up here and there.

I’m just surprised that it’s a German outfit showing some fun.

“Meine Brille” is the second track and the digital elements in it gel well enough to set the pace for the following compositions. “Super Hei Ins Trommelfell” is an agitated video game nightmare with some call and response of all-out chanting with demonic growling. Easily my favorite here. “Viva Mariposa” is as lofty as they get and the results can be a little weird, almost like watching a philosophical anime with metal playing in the background.

“Psycho” is another solid number in the back half that sees them getting airy when they need to and heavy with controlled sparseness. Closer “Kind Im Brunnen,” for all its metal appliqués seems more pop fun than anything else, and that’s a good thing. These guys sound like they’d be a lot of fun live.
