Wii U discontinue rumors and DSi eShop closing

Last week it was reported on the website Nikkei that Nintendo would be stopping production of the Wii U in favor of focusing on their next console the NX. The next day it was reported that Nintendo is denying these rumors saying that the Wii U will be in production for the next quarter and thereafter.

First off the quarter ended March 31st meaning that the next quarter they’re referring to is April, May and June and thereafter could only be one quarter: July, August and September. Wii U could be discontinued in October/November and Nintendo wouldn’t technically be lying.

Even if they do discontinue the Wii U is that really a problem? It’s not like you’ll never be able to find a Wii U again because even after stores run out of new ones there will always be the second hand market. The report on nikkei also says that they’re still going to be releasing new games for the Wii U and they still have Zelda (even if it does pull a Twilight Princess and is released on both the Wii U and NX)

Aside from that the Wii U might be forced to stop production if some of the components used to make it have already stopped production.

In the end, the Wii U being discontinued really shouldn’t be an issue. If you already have a Wii U then it doesn’t effect you and if you don’t have a Wii U then you either don’t want one or are waiting. If you’re waiting on getting one then even if the Wii U discontinues you’ll still be able to get one until stocks run out and after that you’ll just need to buy a used one. The option of getting a Wii U will always be there and Nintendo ceasing production to focus on the NX would just mean that we don’t have another Wii launch where if you didn’t get it at launch you either had to pay an outrageous mark up on eBay or wait months until stores had it back in stock.

Don’t get the wrong idea, I love Nintendo and I love my Wii U, but I can’t think of anyone that will be effected when Nintendo stops making them.

If you’re wondering what prompted all this, it was a facebook posted

In other Nintendo news that really helps drive my point home the DSi digital store front will be closing down on March 31st, 2017.

At this time next year owners of a Nintendo DSi will be unable to purchase or download new games digitally for their DSi. Most DSiware games are compatible with the 3DS so they’ll always be available there. You can even transfer your games from your DSi to your 3DS and redownload them.

Are they even making DSiware games anymore? The fact that the store is still up this long after the 3DS’ released is kinds shocking to me.
